Week 1: Jesse Wilkins, Running Back - North Shore Tech

Our first player of the week comes from North Shore Tech, a team with high hopes for a solid season after an opening game win over South Shore Tech, 22-7.
Jesse Wilkins is a well known name in the North Shore circles of high school football talk. For the 2010 season, much of the success of his team will be on his shoulders and all North Shore Tech fans hope he has a healthy season. In the first game of the year, Jesse did not disappoint anyone----in fact, he opened up the eyes of numerous casual high school football followers with a tremendous display of ball carrying-----31 carries in all----for 269 yards, 2 touchdowns, caught a pass for a 2 point conversion after a touchdown and led North Shore Tech to a 22-7 win ---- a fantastic way to begin the season. Imagine this----North Shore Tech ran a total of 38 plays and Jesse Wilkins carried the ball 31 of them……and averaged almost 8.7 yards per carry despite being keyed on by the best defensive players South Shore Tech could have following him all afternoon. Jesse was so dominant that North Shore Tech attempted but 2 passes all day---and that’s from a team who in 2009 threw 20 passes per game. CONGRATULATIONS TO JESSE WILKINS OF NORTH SHORE TECH, OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK !

Week 2:
Player of the week (9/18/2010)
Our second player of the week comes from Salem High School and is the first Salem selectee in 2 years. Quarterback Brad Skeffington certainly saw some tough days on the gridiron for the Witches in 2009. He was continually sacked behind the line of scrimmage or forced to run for his life when the other team’s huge linebackers were ready to pounce on him. This year is different, as in the first 2 games, Brad Skeffington, a top honor roll student,  had the Salem Witches playing well and his team 2-0.  Against an improved Saugus team, Skeffington really shined. He threw 2 TD passes to Joey Dinh, one of 67 yards and one of 65 yards, ran  for TDs- 5 yards, 65 yards and 67 yards leading Salem to their second straight win of the season, 48-20. Brad also threw for 2-extra point attempts and ran for another. All toll, Brad had a direct hand in 36 of his team’s 48 points. He was credited with gaining 159 yards on the ground and threw for an additional 208 yards.
OUR SLYVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK---BRAD  SKEFFINGTON OF SALEM HIGH SCHOOL!!!!!!

Week 3: GINO COHEE-QUARTERBACK-LYNNFIELD HIGH SCHOOL
"We had all sorts of defensive schemes to stop him, but running or passing we didn't have an answer for him."----Dave Woods, Bishop Fenwick Head Football Coach commented after the game on his team's attempts to control Lynnfield QB Gino Cohee.
Cohee dodged the Fenwick defensive schemes throwing the ball 10 times completing 6 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. Cohee also ran for two touchdowns when the game was still in doubt to lead his Pioneers to a 42-21 win over the Crusaders of Bishop Fenwick. Adding to the headaches, Fenwick must have received from Cohee's ability, the Lynnfield Quarterback ran for two TD's, one from four yards out in the 2nd quarter and one of twenty-six yards early in the 3rd quarter to cement the third win of the young season for the Pioneers without a defeat. Cohee had a hand in almost half of his team's points as Lynnfield is off to their best start in years with a 3-0 record.
CONGRATULATIONS TO LYNNFIELD HIGH SCHOOL QUARTERBACK GINO COHEE OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF WEEK!!!!!!!!!!

Week 4: 10/4/10

OUR SLYVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK-----MIKE WALSH OF SWAMPSCOTT HIGH SCHOOL !!!!!
Swampscott High School plays an exciting brand of football---the game is wide open, lots of passing and plenty of points put up on the scoreboard.
Last week, Swampscott defeated Peabody 30-28 in a game that could have gone either way. Quarterback Mike Walsh scored a touchdown, threw for 2 more and completed 18 passes for 176 yards-----a pretty good afternoon of work. However, his best day was still a week away.
This week against Revere, Swampscott had all they could handle and then some. Down 35-14 at half, things looked very bad until Mike Walsh went to work.  Mike rallied his team to a 43-42 win which included a game winning TD pass to Zach Beerman with 16 seconds left in the game to give Swampscott their 3rd consecutive win. His day’s work consisted of completing 25 passes in 40 attempts totaling 327 yards, 3 touchdowns and running for another TD….PLUS carrying the ball 11 times for 82 yards.
In the last 2 weeks, Mike Walsh has thrown 5 TD passes, completed 43 passes for over 500 yards,  run for 2 TD’s and lead his team to 2 wins by a total of 3 points.
CONGRATULATIONS TO MIKE WALSH OF SWAMPSCOTT HIGH SCHOOL, OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK !!!!!!!!

Week 5: 10/9/10
OUR SLYVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK-----TYLER COPPOLA OF ST. JOHN’S PREP !!!!!
St. John’s Prep was hungry for a win after losing a tough game to Brockton last week.
Their opponent, Mt. St. Joseph’s of Maryland, traveled a long way from home to get to Danvers to play a football game and they were ready from the opening kickoff.
Jumping out to a 21-0 lead, Mt. St. Joseph’s looked unstoppable….until the kickoff after the 3rd MSJ touchdown. St. John’s buckled down and cut the lead to 21-7. Tyler Coppola did not score the Prep’s first TD, but did return the kickoff 96 yards to set it up….Minutes  later he scored on a 57 yard run to cut the lead to 21-14 at halftime.
In the first minute of the 3rd quarter, Coppola took off on a 76 yard TD run and shortly thereafter, a 48 yard TD run to give SJP their first lead 28-21. Coppola was not finished yet. With seconds left in the 3rd qtr., he did it again, this time 61 yards for his 3rd TD of the quarter and 4th of the game.
After MSJ scored to narrow the gap to 35-28, Coppola did it again, this time from 42 yards for his 5th TD of the afternoon and giving SJP their 3rd wins of the season.
On the day, Tyler carried the ball 20 times and gained 346 yards (average 17 yds per carry), scored 5 TD’s, returned punts and kick offs for 135 yards and caught a pass for 5 yards giving him a spectacular day of 486 all purpose yards.
CONGRATULATIONS TO TYLER COPPOLA OF ST. JOHN’S PREP,  OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK !!!!!!!!

Week 6:

Player of the week (10/16/2010)

OUR SLYVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK------BRENDAN OLIVER OF THE PINGREE SCHOOL IN HAMILTON !!!!!!

The Pingree School in Hamilton began a football program just 5 years ago. They play their home games on a baseball field, have 2 goal posts, no bleachers, no locker rooms nearby and when extra points are kicked half decently, the ball sails into the woods and a scramble to find it ensues.

But all these problems just don’t seem to bother the coaching staff or players, as this program has gotten off to a surprisingly terrific beginning.

Heading into their 4th game and operating in the wide open “Swampscott” offense, Pingree defeated Pomfret Academy 37-9 using a huge 2nd half to nail down the win.

Quarterback Brendan Oliver directed a “no-huddle” offense completing 22 passes to 7 different receivers for 385 yards, 4 touchdowns and intercepted a pass and ran it back 40 yards for a score to lead Pingree to their 4th win of the season with no losses. Not bad for a small school still in the infancy stages with their football program.

CONGRATULATIONS TO  BRENDAN  OLIVER  OF  PINGREE  SCHOOL,  OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK !!!!!!!!

Week 7:

Sylvan Street Grille Player of the Week (10/23/10)

OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK IS
BRET KIDIK OF BISHOP FENWICK HIGH SCHOOL !!

This has got to be the year of the quarterback in high school football on the North shore. We have had some amazing success stories----and we have one more!
Whenever a quarterback throws 3 interceptions, the coaching staff begins to think maybe a change is in order. Turnovers usually lead to points against you and a loss ensues----unless of course you are BRET KIDIK OF FENWICK HIGH SCHOOL.
Yes, Brett had 3 passes intercepted….BUT, what I haven’t told you is he threw for 6 TD’s, completed 25 passes for 425 yards and brought Bishop Fenwick back from 2 td’s behind to an exciting 44-40 win in the Catholic Conference Large first league game.
Bret Kidik’s touchdown passes went to 4 different receivers and he completed passes to 7 different players in this Fenwick win including scores from 62, 58, 52, 42,and 18 yards.
By the way---this is the first year Bret has been the Fenwick starter---and he has tossed 18 td passes in 7 games.
Congratulations Bret Kidik of Fenwick---our player of the week!

Week 8: Sylvan Street Grille Player of the Week (10/30/10)

OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK IS
JORDAN SHAIRS OF GLOUCESTER SCHOOL!

Gloucester High School football has dominated the North Shore the past few years, not because of a great class or a few outstanding players, but because of a strong team work ethic that begins in the winter and goes right through to the first August  practice. When you play for this high school team, you are in top condition long before the Labor Day weekend. Their record as we write this is 23-0 over 2 years.
Jordan Shairs has played a part in this success, and being a Gloucester football player, saw a lot of varsity action as a sophomore before becoming a 2-way starter his final 2 years of high school. Up until this time, I think the word “consistent” described his play. He is an excellent blocker, very good linebacker and excels on special teams.

Jordan Shairs had the game we all dream about. He carried the ball 24 times and gained 247 yards------plus scored 6 touchdowns in Gloucester’s 50-29 win over Lynn English Shairs' 6 touchdowns is a single game record. Don’t let the one sided score fool you----at halftime it was 19-17 but Jordan took care of business in the 3rd quarter, scoring 3 times---almost enough to put the game out of reach. In the 4th quarter, he did just that, scoring twice more.
Now----on top of the 6 touchdowns and 247 yards---Jordan was also selected as the Moynihan DEFENSIVE player of the game for his outstanding play at linebacker.

Congratulations JORDAN SHAIRS OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK !!!!!

Week 9:
Sylvan Street Grille Player of the Week (11/6/10)

OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK IS
BRENDAN FLAHERTY OF BEVERLY HIGH SCHOOL !!

Playing  for Beverly High School in the early part of the season could be considered depressing as the first 5 games went into the loss column. While the Panthers were playing hard, the non league schedule was really doing a number on them.

Once the league schedule began, things changed. Beverly posted wins over Saugus, Winthrop and Danvers and had a date with Marblehead, also 3-0 in their league and defending champions.

Beverly got the first TD on a 3 yard run by Brendan Flaherty. After Marblehead tied the score, Brendan Flaherty started the 2nd quarter with a 44 yard touchdown run. He added 2 more TD’s in that quarter giving Beverly a 26-7 halftime lead.

Just to make sure there wouldn’t be a Marblehead comeback, young Brendan Flaherty scored his 5th TD on a 38 yard run, finished the day with 21 carries for 217 yards, and helped  the Panthers  to  their 4th consecutive league win for the season against no losses…and for all you Mom’s, he’s also an high honor roll student.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BRENDAN FLAHERTY OF BEVERLY HIGH SCHOOL, OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK !!!!!!

Week 10:

Sylvan Street Grille Player of the Week (11/13/10)

OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK IS JAMES BRAO OF HAMILTON-WENHAM HIGH SCHOOL !
Over the last couple of years, playing football at Hamilton-Wenham has been a tough situation. The Generals have been a young team in a competitive league that have struggled for wins.

This year, the young players are seniors and Hamilton-Wenham battled itself into the Cape Ann Conference final game----a must  win for a chance at the playoffs. Tied with Lynnfield the last week of the season, this win was vital. A championship for the first time in 50 years at Hamilton-Wenham was possible.

But things looked impossible. HW fell behind 15-13 with just 3 minutes to play and 81 yards to score..But thanks to superb pass blocking from James Brao and the offensive line, HW moved the ball to the Lynnfield 7 yard line with seconds left. What should they do??

They called on Brao, the backup kicker who had been pressed into duty when the regular kicker went down with an injury,-who then booted a 25 yard field goal to give the Generals their first ever trip to the playoffs. 50 years of waiting----now you can call them champions!

Brao suffered through all the losing seasons---and 3 consecutive years has been voted the team’s top lineman. A strong blocker on offense, a tackling machine on defense----and a kicker. He has been selected as player of the week by the Boston Globe more than once.  In this game alone, he had 7 individual tackles, 2 sacks,….and one huge field goal.

In the fall, he’ll attend Tufts University-------how lucky are they to get this student athlete !!!!!

Week 11:
Sylvan Street Grille Player of the Week (12/4/2010)

OUR SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK IS JOE AVILA OF GLOUCESTER HIGH SCHOOL !

Playing under pressure is not an easy thing to do. At Gloucester HS, pressure is extra difficult as during this season, you are coming in a defending Super Bowls Champions----undefeated and untied
Joe Avila was the Fishermen quarterback and played the position with some experience as he got in a lot during the 2009 season when his team was ahead----no pressure! But this year was different.
Two of the Fishermen’s better players went down with injuries---Gilbert Brown (Knee) and Brandon Cusamano (shoulder) both missed about 3-4 games. Joe Avila, at crunch time, had to step up and take charge.
After winning on Thanksgiving, it was off to Lincoln Sudbury for the first round of the playoffs. Gloucester runs the ball---and throws only to keep others off balance. Joe threw the ball 4 times in Lincoln, completed 3, one for a TD in a 21-0 win, Off to the Super Bowl.
The pass was more effective here----they let Joe throw 8-----he completes 6 and 2 for TD’s------Gloucester won the Super Bowl and along with it 26 consecutive victories……and Joe, under pressure, complete 75% of his playoff passes and 3 found the endzone.

OUR PLAYER OF THE WEEK--------JOE AVILA OF GLOUCESTER HIGH SCHOOL !
