Week 1: Mike Walsh, Quarterback,
Swampscott High School Mike Walsh is a winner of this award for the 2nd consecutive season and without
overlooking his success for 2010, this season has started off extremely well for Walsh and the Swampscott Big Blue. Playing
a non league game against Sommerville HS on a day that the Town of Swampscott named the entry way to Phillips Park “Bondelevitch
Way” in honor of Swampscott’s long time Coach Stan Bondelevitch, Walsh lead Swampscott’s opening drive by
throwing a 41 yard TD pass to give the Big Blue an early lead. Before the first half was over, he scored a TD to give his
team a 20-6 lead. To begin the 2nd half, Walsh tossed a 50 yard TD pass to extend the lead to 27-6,
a lead that was never threatened as Swampscott won 33-18. For the day, Mike Walsh completed 13 of 19 passes for
176 yards and 2 TD’s, and ran the ball 11 times for 150 yards and scored a TD…… a great way to begin the
season.

Week 2: Nat Gaye, Running Back,
Peabody High School
Nat Gaye caught the eyes of many last year with his ability to run
the football and play defense for the Tanners. Unfortunately, Peabody was in a rebuilding year and despite his terrific 2010
season, not many noticed! But in Peabody’s second game of the season, Nat Gaye caught the eye of all the coaches
and players in the conference with a spectacular night against Danvers High School. In the first half, he scored 2 TD’s
on runs of 14 and 19 yards to give Peabody what seemed to be a commanding lead. But Danvers rebounded and scored in the 4th
quarter to cut the deficit to 14-7. Nate Gaye then sealed the victory with a spectacular 70 yard run to give the Tanners a
21-7 win. On the night, Gaye carried the ball 19 times for 200 yards, an average of just over 10.5 yards per carry. Our
player of the week---Nate Gaye, Peabody High School

Week 3:
Kenny Pierce, Beverly High
School
At the beginning of this football season, Kenny Pierce was penciled in to be a backup
running back for Beverly. Most considered him to be a solid replacement to the starters AND would add strength to an already
good team. Lynn English, a preseason favorite had other ideas. On a rainy Friday night at the Manning Bowl, the
Bulldogs scored on the opening kickoff and then jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the 2nd quarter, it sure looked like a long night
for Beverly. Pierce thought differently and scored a TD to cut the lead to 21-6. Moments later, he did it again and now its
21-12. Lynn English extended their lead with a minute and a half left in the quarter and it’s now 27-12. English kicked
off and Pierce returned the kick 81 yards for a score. Now it’s halftime, English on top 27-18. Five TD’s scored
in the 2nd quarter alone by these teams. In the opening drive of the 3rd quarter, Pierce scored his 4th TD and Beverly
cut the lead to 28-24. English drove and scored again and led 35-24 going into the 4th quarter. The rain was really coming
down. In the 4th quarter, Kenny Pierce scored his 5th TD, cutting the lead to 35-30. With 30 seconds left in the
game, Beverly scored again and won the game 36-35. For the night, Kenny Pierce scored 5 touchdowns, gained 153 yards,
played the entire game on both offense and defense, ran back kicks and punts------scored 30 points-----not a bad night for
a back up!!!!

Week 4:
North
Shore Tech faced off against Manchester Essex. North Shore Tech punted the ball on their opening drive and forced Manchester-Essex

haven’t run an official play. The next play set the tone for the afternoon. Running back Jake Fitzgerald scooted
96 yards for a TD on the first official offensive play and Manchester-Essex went on top 7-0. Before the half ended, Fitzgerald
carried the ball 56 yards for his 2nd TD of the 1st half and Manchester-Essex was on top 13-0. In the 2nd half,

SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Our player of the week- CONNOR WILE NEWBURYPORT HIGH SCHOOL
Week 5:
Taking the long bus ride from Newburyport to Marblehead can
be draining----and playing Marblehead at home in a football game can be a real tough task. Newburyport came in to
Marblehead and received such a shock, most fans thought it was going to be a route. It looked as though Marblehead had their
4th win of the year in the bag. At half, they lead 20-0 and after 3 quarters, the score stood Marblehead 26 Newburyport 0. Now---maybe
Newburyport just woke up from their bus ride! Connor Wile threw a TD pass to Colton Fontaine to cut the lead to 26-7 with
9:26 remaining in the game. After a couple of turnovers, there was but 7 minutes to play. Newburyport drove 78 yards in 3
minutes and Connor Wile threw his 2nd TD pass, this one to Ian Michaels. Now, it’s 26-14 but just 1:40 left in the game. A
Newburyport onside kick is successful and 2 plays later, Connor Wile tosses his 3rd TD pass of the quarter, this one to Brett
Fontaine and the score is 26-21 with 1:21 left in the game. Another successful onside kick----would it work? Nope,
it didn’t. Marblehead needed to get a 1st down and run out the clock. It just didn’t happen that way. Newburyport
intercepted a Marblehead pass with 1:06 remaining and marched down the field and Connor Wile threw his 4th TD pass of the
quarter, this one to Michaels again, giving the Clippers of Newburyport 27 2nd half points and a shocking win over Marblehead. For
the day, Connor Wile completed 30 of 41 passes for 294 yards in the game, 15 of 19 in the 4th quarter alone and 4 were for
touchdowns.

SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Our player of the week - TREVOR LYONS, HAMILTON-WENHAM HIGH SCHOOL Week 6:
Hamilton-Wenham football, like all schools, has had its
good years and not so good years. The way the season ended in 2010, it looked as though the players and coaches were really
looking forward to 2011. Playing in their 5th game of this season against Bishop Fenwick, the Generals of H/W just
let their quarterback do the work….and did he ever! Trevor Lyons showed Bishop Fenwick why he is such a dangerous
runner----but was allowed to do so only in the first half. Lyons scored 5 touchdowns---on runs of 10, 29, 40, 68 and
70 yards to help lead his team to their 10th consecutive win over the last 2 seasons. Leading by a score of 34-0 at halftime,
Trevor Lyons and his 30 points received the 2nd half off from his Coach, Andy Morency. For his half of work, Trevor
Lyons ran for 287 yards rushing on 11 attempts, an average of 28.7 yards a carry. The Hamilton Wenham defense
has allowed but 5 points a game while scoring at a clip of 21 per game. Solid and competitive football is back in Generaltown
as they look forward to their 6th win of the season at Manchester-Essex and their 11th straight win over 2 years.

SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Our player of the week - WILL QUIGLEY, OUR SYLVAN STREET PLAYER OF THE

Will Quigley, Marblehead High School Marblehead High School is a strong and vastly improving program that won their conference last season and have won 4 of
their first 6 games for the 2011 season. They compete in the 2nd Tier of the Northeast/Cape Ann conference. One of the
toughest things Marblehead has tried to do is beat Gloucester---something they haven’t done since 1991. But this year
is very different!!!!! Led by running back Will Quigley, Marblehead broke a 20 year jinx and defeated Gloucester 22-6.
Quigley scored 3 touchdowns----all when they mattered----to give Marblehead the lead at half time, to extend the lead in the
3rd quarter and to seal the win in the 4th. All together, Quigley carried the ball 17 times---gained 181 yards—and gave
Marblehead their biggest win of the 2011 season

SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Our player of the week - Kurt Hunziker, Masconomet Regional High School Week 8: Touchdown makers get the glory. They get their pictures in the paper and
their stats in every newspaper with the num ber of touchdowns they have scored and total yards they have gained. However,
every running back, every quarterback, every wide receiver will tell you that their team cannot win without their star player,
often someone who never makes the headlines. This week’s winner is Kurt Hunziker of Masconomet High School,
a team on the move. In this week’s win over Lynn Classical, he was credited with making 11 individual tackles and assisting
on a half dozen others as the team’s best defensive player. He is also the fullback on offense who doesn’t carry
the ball often, but is the first back to break up the defensive line so the running back can make positive yards. He is the
last line of blocking to protect the passer, who at Masconomet, is seldom sacked. On top of all this, he is an ALL
AMERICAN LACROSSE PLAYER and is heading to UMass in the fall. KURT HUNZIKER, OUR SYLVAN STREET PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK NICK VALLES, DANVERS HIGH SCHOOL Week 10:
Danvers High School has had a tough struggle this year. While the effort is sincere, the results have not been
favorable. That all changed on Senior Night when Danvers took on Salem. Nick Valles ran and blocked extremely hard in his
last game at Dr. Deering Stadium and helped Danvers break a 4 game losing streak and defeat Salem 42-28. In particular in
this game was Nick’s 42 yard run in the 2nd quarter to give Danvers a 20-6 lead, a lead they would never relinquish.
In the 2nd half, when not blocking for a fellow running back, Nick scored twice more ending the day with 20 points scored,
238 yards gained on 26 carries and a win on his final home game of his high school football career. To make things complete
this night for the Valles family, Nick’s younger brother Alex scored a touchdown in the 2nd quarter as well. Our Sylvan

SYLVAN STREET GRILLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK JONATHAN THOMAS ST. JOHN’S
PREP
Week 11:
St. John’s Prep plays one of the toughest football schedules in the state. On top of their league
games, they play teams like Brocton, Central Catholic, etc. and always play on Thanksgiving against a good Xavarian High School.
This season, the Prep began with a very young team after losing 23 players to graduation. The tough schedule remained
for the young team, and out of some adversity came sophomore Jonathan Thomas. On Thanksgiving, Thomas carried the 29 times,
gained 202 yards, scored 2 touchdowns, one a brilliant 37 yard run where he broke several tackles and brought St. John’s
back from a 3 touchdown deficit to against one the teams originally thought to be in the Boston Globe’s top 10. On the
play previous to his TD run, Thomas picked up 38 yards on an off tackle play to set up his touchdown run. St. John’s
scored twice in the final quarter, one on Jon Thomas’ second TD to close the gap to 28-21 with just a minute and a half
left in the game. An unsuccessful onsides kick ended the contest. Jon Thomas averaged nearly 7 yards a carry….and
he and most of his teammates will be back for the 2012 season.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK—JON THOMAS
